Dear students,
On behalf of the families of
the Stillwater church of Christ and the many students of the
University Center campus ministry, I want to welcome you to
OSU and into our Christian family. This is a wonderful time
in your life and a great opportunity to continue becoming a
strong, devoted believer in the death, burial and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
I hope you will realize very
quickly that you are part of something very special, very
powerful, and very diverse in the Stillwater family.
Although the Stillwater congregation is composed of many
different backgrounds, personalities, experiences, and ages
– we are all here together celebrating one idea…the hope
that we have because we believe in the promise of Jesus
Christ. This is our core and it is the most important gift
we will ever try to extend to you.
The Stillwater family offers
oneness to you because we find hope and life in Jesus alone.
The Stillwater family will bring this idea to you with all
of our warts, sin, and personal struggles. Although we are
committed to following God’s will for our lives, we also
know that we will struggle with pride, fear, and our own
idolatry. We ask for your forgiveness when we are less than
you expect and we ask for your willingness to fellowship
with us anyways as we learn to grow together this year. This
is the example we have learned from Jesus and the example we
desire to understand and extend to you.
Although the University
Center is under the eldership of the Stillwater church of
Christ, many congregations and individuals have provided
financial gifts to make the University Center campus
ministry available to you today. They are a great example of
how believers are able to place themselves aside and risk
being part of a very important ministry to you. They believe
that YOU are worth being a part of the oneness they have
experienced in Jesus Christ. They believe that YOU need to
experience and grow in your understanding of the depth of
the love which only Jesus can offer.
Know that throughout this
year, you will change many times. You will advance and
retreat in your faith many times. You spiritual strength
will ebb and flow this year. It will deepen with the many
moments that you experience new facets of God. It will
weaken with more realistic understandings of sin and its
consequences. It will mature and become stronger when you
continue to seek first the mercy and way of Jesus Christ.
Remember that this church is
praying fervently for you as you go through these changes.
Remember that we are a church composed of many people who
have also gone to college. We are ready to minister to you,
willing to wait up for you, and excited to share in your
energy, passion, and growth.
As Paul says to the
Corinthians, “make room for us in your hearts” as we
challenge ourselves to open wide our hearts to you. Or as he
writes to the Ephesians and to us today, “for this reason I
kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in
heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his
glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his
Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your
hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and
established in love, may have power, together with all the
saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the
love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses
knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the
fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably
more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that
is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in
Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
Amen.”
